In this paper we will try to illustrate some of the main theses that, since the 1970s, dealt with the idea of ecosystem health. We will divide these theses into two opposite sides. On the one hand, some authors argued that it is appropriate to speak of ecosystem health. On the other hand, other authors argued that ecosystem health is a wrong metaphor, both because there is non-universal evidence in favour of its existence and because this metaphor would be based on an incorrect analogy between living organisms and ecosystems. Finally, we will discuss the weaknesses and strengths of each of the two sides, and try to justify the use of the expression «ecosystem medicine», which was introduced in the late 1970s.
