Based on a comparative investigation of the 2013 «Forconi» (Pitchforks) and the 2024 «Trattori» (Tractors) movements, the paper takes the two events as revelatory of the contemporary forms of Euroscepticism in Italy. Employing a theoretical framework that dissects Euroscepticism into ideological, political, rhetorical-relational and communicative dimensions, this study applies Computer-Assisted Text Analysis (Cata) to two samples of 1.000 public comments each, related to Facebook Italia posts about the protests (N retrieved posts = 11.956 for «Forconi» and 24.723 for «Trattori»). Findings reveal that both movements are driven by economic and financial issues. Nonetheless, the «Forconi» movement’s Euroscepticism is characterised by a structural opposition to Eu institutions, with rhetoric focusing on sovereignty, national identity and the populist leitmotif of «the people» against (practically every form of) expertise and authority. In contrast, the «Trattori» movement exhibits predominantly policy-specific Euroscepticism, although it retains some elements of the broader Euroscepticism seen in the «Forconi» movement. This is partly countered by a pro-Eu movement driven by environmental and public health concerns. The analysis also highlights distinct thematic focuses between the two movements.
