190This contribution explores the causes of emotional and mental development arrest, outlining, through the clinical material of a young patient, a specific aspect of the failure of maternal containment linked to projective identification processes and the absence of a triangular space. The author starts from Bion’s hypothesis that at the basis of thought development, the newborn has an innate disposition that corresponds to an expectation of a breast, a preconception. The breast is understood by Bion as a function performed by the maternal container, since the child’s experience of the breast is a source of emotional experiences later represented by terms such as love, intelligence and meaning. Through clinical material, a reflection is proposed on the causes of failure and on the misconceptions and disorientations – as described by Money-Kyrle – that hinder healthy contact with reality, causing a halt in development. The analytical experience allows one to recover contact with the true experience of the self and the consequent sense of well-being and joy generated by the integration of unlived aspects of life (Ogden).
