This paper seeks to analyze the many aspects of humor, understood as textual communication, written or oral, which aims to provoke in the recipient a psycho-emotional reaction of laughter. Taking up what Pirandello wrote in his essay on humor, the author makes a distinction between humor that aims at deriding the other and empathic and intersubjective humor that looks at the other as someone with whom one can identify. This second type of humor can operate in the sense of a transformation of obsolete and maladaptive cognitive and affective patterns in order to find new psychological tools. Humor can be a valuable resource in analysis, although its sustainability within clinical work with the patient must be verified.
