256In the most common narratives on drug use and addiction, consumption of psychoactive substances is often framed as the reckless search for a «high», a temporary pleasure at the expense of the possibility of achieving long-lasting happiness. Through the brief exploration of concrete stories of former addicts, this contribution wants to suggest that the relationship between drug use, rehabilitation and happiness is more complex than the binary opposition between hedonism and wellness, and that practices of self-fashioning have a crucial role in defining what «being happy» can mean.
