331A preliminary distinction about two meanings of happiness is made, and a remark on the end-of-life as a new category of existence is provided in order to say that the new conceptual situation is a fruit of the synergy between the action of the biomedical revolution, that has brought a greater control on biological life, and the impulse of the secularization as disenchantment of the world, that has changed the narrative concerning the meaning of life and of suffering. In the new historical circumstances, the end-of-life is a sort of shoreline emerged from the top of a cliff and the sea. For this reason, in the new territory of the end-of-life it can happen that because of overtreatment or of other situations of existential suffering, a person is set in the «infernal condition», i.e. a situation in which living is worst than dying (life is worse than death). The fact that there is the infernal condition is crucial from a social-cultural standpoint, because it changes the traditional hierarchy of values accepted by the Western axiology, in which death is the worst of all evils. If the infernal condition is worse than death, than in the end-of-life voluntary dying is an important option for the happiness as a whole of the person.
