Two main themes have shaped the political interpretation of Herodotus’ "Histories" throughout the twentieth century. The first concerns the narrator’s engagement with democracy, while the second emphasizes ethnic and cultural identity as a driver of political cohesion. These perspectives influenced numerous scholars, particularly in early twentieth-century Germany. In the latter half of the century, however, these interpretations were reworked under the influence of some of the most influential analyses of contemporary democracy.
