This article is based on resultas from qualitative research carried out between 2020 and 2023 with first-time fathers. The text analyses fatherhood by combining sociology of gender and sociology of age transitions. In particular, the paper explains how the common sentiment evoked by the interviewees about the masculine loss of control over the procreative experience – which is considered by these men as rather exclusive of mothers – is accompanied by an attempt to regain a parental role through the valorization of a new masculine investment at home. The empirical results show how evolutions in masculine ideals through entering fatherhood both reproduce gender inequalities within household and new masculine practices and identifications. In doing this, the article also pays specific attention to discuss how social and cultural backgrounds play a core role in shaping constructions of masculinity and ages.
