The essay collects actual experiences of AI use in Italian and foreign journalistic field. The result is an experimental context denoting many internal differences, and particularly a peculiar separation between theory and practices. The former is largely polarized by, quoting Umberto Eco, «apocalypse» and «functionalism». On one side, not only journalists but even data scientists raise the alarm on a technology which is already (and increasingly in the near future) out of human control. On the other side, AI is currently used to replace boring and repetitive routines in order to make room for more creative newsmaking, analysis, and interpretation.
