43This paper explores the premise that technologies, and the decisions regarding which technologies to develop and adopt, are not neutral. Instead, they reflect underlying power dynamics within society. The analysis focuses on the factors driving investments in digitization and automation among Italian businesses and examines the implications of these processes for the labour market. The findings highlight that the effects of digital transformation are uneven across different groups of workers, with the adaptation processes often exacerbating imbalances and inequalities. This paper offers a critical reflection on how technological change can reshape labour dynamics and calls for a deeper understanding of its social and economic consequences.
