The paper explores the conceptual and historical tensions surrounding gender transition by juxtaposing two dominant frameworks: the biomedical model and the epistemological field of Transgender Studies (TS). The biomedical paradigm, deeply rooted in the medicalization of gender non-conformity since the late 19th century, has historically defined trans experiences through diagnostic and corrective lenses, reinforcing heteronormative and binary logics. In contrast, Transgender Studies, emerging in the 1990s, challenge this pathologization by centering lived and embodied trans experiences, advancing critical methodologies that intersect with feminist and queer theories, and reframing gender as a socially, culturally, and technologically constructed process. By tracing the historical development of both paradigms, the paper highlights how TS offer critical tools to resist normalization and to reimagine gender beyond medical and binary confines.
