The paper recalls the main features of the transition from socialism to capitalism in Eastern Europe, a process that officially started in November 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall. It gives an overview of the most important objectives of the transition to a market economy, how they were implemented, and what were the main results. The principal flaws of the transition are also discussed, that came to the surface in 2007-08 when the global financial and economic crisis strongly hit East European countries. Some main lessons from more than thirty years of transition to a market economy in Eastern Europe are also drawn.
