This study examines the multifaceted impacts of exogenous shocks on tourism destinations, emphasizing their role in reshaping the economic landscapes of tourism-dependent regions. Utilizing a regional science perspective, it delves into how diverse regions absorb, adapt, and potentially thrive following such shocks, which include financial crises, natural disasters, man-made crises, and health emergencies. Understanding the spatial economic dynamics that affect a region’s vulnerability and recovery capabilities is important, to avoid merely focusing on bouncing back but instead on transforming and capitalizing on these disturbances as catalysts for development, innovation and growth. The study further explores the interplay between regional competitiveness and resilience, emphasizing the critical need for nuanced policy and strategic planning to enhance the adaptive capacities of tourism-dependent regions against global shocks. The special issue "Impact of Exogenous Shocks on Tourism Destinations" encourages a proactive approach in regional planning and policy-making aimed at strengthening economic, infrastructural, and social foundations to ensure sustainability and long-term viability amidst global uncertainties.
