261According to Eurostat data, French manufacturing sector emitted 380 g CO2 equivalent per euro of value added in 2021, a third more than its German counterpart (290 g CO2 eq/€). This study conducts in-depth analyses in order to assess that statistical gap in the light of CO2 emission data compilation and interviews with sectoral experts. As our study reveals, this carbon intensity gap between French and German industries mainly reflects differences in sectoral and product mixes: the over-representation of carbon intensive activities in France accounts for three quarters of the statistical gap. In addition, differences in range of products between countries skew the evaluation and comparison of carbon intensity. Last, this study empirically reveals the importance of emission scope when comparing carbon footprints. As a matter of fact, once scope 2 emissions linked to electricity consumption are added, most German industries actually appear more carbon-intensive than French industries.
