407Mary Ellen Richmond (1861-1928) is recognised as a founding figure of social work, both as a discipline and as a profession. Her contributions introduced a scientific approach to social intervention, grounded in a rigorous method and in principles such as individualisation and the mutual adaptation between person and environment. Works such as "Social Diagnosis" (1917) and "What Is Social Case Work?" (1922) laid the foundations for participatory, personalised practices oriented towards social justice. The relevance of her thought emerges in many of the reflections developed within the anti-oppressive approach and eco-social work. To consider her a classic means acknowledging her ability to respond to the needs of the present, offering tools to address the complexities of the contemporary world. In this sense, her legacy is more alive than ever, at a time when social work is called upon to combine technical expertise with ethical commitment in order to promote the well-being of communities.
