Among the urban landscapes of the 20th century, the so-called “Pontine pentapolis” constitutes an interconnected but heterogeneous system with strong ideological and symbolic values. If the agricultural program of fascism was based on the idea of land colonization and redemption, its propagandistic and political goals found their maximum expression in the urban model. Littoria (nowadays Latina, 1932), Sabaudia (1934), Pontinia (1935), Aprilia (1937) and Pomezia (1939) are five of the six new town built between 1932 and 1939. Documenting the phenomenon of urban systems built by totalitarianisms requires highlighting censures and transformations that, more than 90 years later, stimulate a broader reflection on legacy and future of places and sites with controversial memories. The study investigates the origins and transformative path of Latina, stressing insights and strategies for direct and indirect protection of one of the most significant urban landscapes of the early 20th century.
