25The regeneration of Carbonia, encompassing both the city and the mine, challenges established paradigms of heritage conservation. Founded in the late 1930s at the mouth of a mine to meet the demands of energy autarky, the city was conceived and built not for permanence, but as a response to an emergency. Having endured the crisis of the mining sector, it now faces the complex task of regeneration: safeguarding its identity while managing the radical transformation of uses. The mine, emptied by industrial decommissioning, becomes a catalyst for the recovery of memory through new paradigms – museums, research centres, and spaces for social life. Meanwhile, the city – still vital but profoundly transformed – seeks an identity anchor by restoring urban monuments with philological rigour, while envisioning new functions for them. Public spaces are reinterpreted through the preservation of their edges in local trachyte, while their surfaces are updated with new materials and interventions of public art.
