79Patrimonialisation is neither always ‘a good thing,’ nor always necessary. It often fails to authentically safeguard the temporal depth and complex histories inherent in a work; more often, it contributes to the creation of idols and, in some cases, false consciousness—not only mass tourism. This is precisely what the case of Firminy-Vert illustrates, if we strip it of the rhetoric and mythologies that have come to distort it. What emerges is an imaginary site that takes on material form again and again, each time in a different way. It becomes evident that is a genuine abuse of the author’s name, which shifts from being a “word” to becoming a “thing,” ultimately erasing the historical narrative and transforming it into a story that distorts the facts. In an already complex scenario, the alleged “universal values” further entangle the situation, giving rise to a kind of metaphysics of the work itself. Today, heritage is above all a matter of political and economic power. It plays a central role in shaping the cultural legitimacy of the actors involved, as well as in discourses on identity and in the policies that define social bonds. In this sense, Firminy-Vert stands as an almost paradigmatic case.
