89This paper presents the outcomes of research on the modernist architecture of Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, and illustrates the themes of the World Heritage List nomination, “Modernist Architecture in Tashkent. Modernity and Tradition in Central Asia”. The serial nomination includes sixteen modernist buildings constructed during the thawn period (1964-82), when Tashkent was the fourth most populous city in the Soviet Union. Modernist architecture accompanied the political, social, and architectural renewal that made the capital of Uzbekistan one of the major and non-European experiments in urban innovation in the second half of the 20th century.
