This essay examines the recent restoration of a small late-nineteenth-century church in the hamlet of Solomeo, near Perugia, Italy (2018-21). This project stands as an exception to prevailing disciplinary practice: the restoration involved the complete removal of a historic addition – a façade built in the 1940s – with the aim of uncovering the unfinished elevation of the church’s original design. The text discusses the rationale behind the intervention by examining the history and context of the building. The restoration is presented in both its formal and technical aspects, leading to some concluding reflections on the challenges of removing a historic addition.
