320International Retirement Migration (IRM) represents a growing field of interest as it reflects the demographic, economic, and social transformations that characterize contemporary societies. Italy, home to one of the oldest populations in Europe, is experiencing an increasing number of retirees choosing to reside permanently abroad. This study, based on the analysis of longitudinal administrative data provided by the Italian National Institute of Social Security (INPS), examines the socio-demographic and geographical characteristics of Italian retired migrants, highlighting the main determinants of late-life transnational mobility. The analysis reveals that IRM is influenced by a plurality of factors, including economic conditions, favorable tax regimes, cost of living, and the quality of healthcare services in destination countries. Furthermore, significant differences emerge in terms of gender, generational cohorts, and regional distribution of migration, with a predominance of retirees from northern regions and an increasing mobility trend among middle-to-high-income groups. The findings suggest that retirement migration is not merely an individual strategy for optimizing economic resources but also a social phenomenon that calls into question welfare policies and the dynamics of active aging.
