69This study investigates the structural relationships among educational and company tutor support, students’ academic and workplace self-efficacy, and students’ perceptions of the utility of School-to-Work Programs (SWPs). Using Structural Equation Modeling, responses from Italian secondary school students enrolled in General, Vocational, and Technical Upper Secondary Schools were analysed. Grounded in Bandura’s social cognitive theory (1997) and Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent et al., 1994), the study analyses the effects of educational and company tutors support on self-efficacy. Results partially confirm the hypotheses, highlighting the pivotal yet differentiated roles played by educational and company tutors. Educational tutors significantly and directly influenced students’ academic self-efficacy across all school types, emphasizing their crucial role in providing consistent academic guidance. In contrast, the influence of company tutors on workplace self-efficacy was indirect, mediated by the perceived utility of SWPs, particularly pronounced among Vocational and Technical students. Moreover, the findings highlight relevant policy implications, pointing to the importance of establishing uniform standards and promoting continuous professional development for tutors. These measures can contribute to improving program effectiveness and may help mitigate regional and socio-economic disparities in students’ learning experiences. Considering ongoing debates regarding SWPs’ effectiveness and equity, this research reinforces the importance of meaningfully integrating practical experiences into curricula and advocates robust collaborations among educational institutions, policymakers, and relevant stakeholders.
