375The article analyses the appointments of the top Ministerial Advisors (MAs) in Italy, i.e. heads of cabinet and heads of legislative office, during the period May 1994- May 2025. In particular, the essay analyses these appointments by considering several aspects, such as the professional background of the appointees, the turnover rate, and the previous experience rate. In doing so, it analyses whether the recurring presence of populist parties in government in Italy during the period under examination has led to significant changes compared to the past as far as the selection criteria of the top MAs are concerned. Findings reveal that the rise of populist parties to government has not significantly altered selection criteria, since only limited changes can be observed.
