455This special issue investigates how humanitarian governance produces and legitimises new forms of labour and exploitation. In a context marked by global violence and the erosion of humanitarian ideals, the issue argues that humanitarianism remains a powerful apparatus for regulating labour, structuring deservingness, and generating economic value. Focusing on migration and asylum policies and drawing on ethnographic research from Austria, Spain, and Italy, the contributions reveal how unpaid, underpaid, and deskilled work are promoted under the guise of integration, care, or ethical production, while sustaining national hierarchies and precarious conditions. At the same time, they illuminate migrants’ everyday tactics of negotiation and resistance. By bridging debates on migration, labour, and humanitarianism, this special issue calls for a renewed political economy of humanitarian governance – one attentive to its productive and racialised mechanisms.
