This article explores the role of «unpaid labour» within the Spanish asylum reception system. Drawing on three ethnographic studies conducted at various reception sites in Spain, we examine the dynamics of unpaid labour, understood as work undertaken for reasons other than monetary compensation within the asylum system. Our findings contribute to the ongoing discussion on neoliberal asylum governance by arguing that the asylum system, particularly the state reception programme, generates and perpetuates exploitation. The article also explores the causes, experiences, and narratives surrounding unpaid labour, shedding light on its impact on individuals navigating or supporting the reception process.
