401The contemporary apparel market reflects consumer dynamics influenced by digitalization on one hand, and sustainability on the other hand. This article analyzes the possible trajectories of the clothing industry between fast fashion and second-hand as two interconnected behaviors: compulsive and compensatory consumption. Driven by low prices and ever-evolving collections, fast fashion encourages emotional and rapid, often unnecessary, purchases, with growing environmental (co2, microplastics, water waste) and social (labor exploitation) impacts. Conversely, the second-hand market is growing thanks to digital platforms that attract environmentally conscious consumers. However, easy accessibility and low costs can lead to excessive consumption, generating a «rebound effect» that could cancel out the expected benefits. A microeconomic model is introduced, reflecting the behavior of two types of consumers (the fashion-addicted and the eco-conscious), showing how even compensatory intentions can lead to compulsive outcomes, mostly if expressed through e-commerce platforms. This raises questions about the real effectiveness of second-hand for sustainability and suggests that the future of fashion will need to integrate ethics, transparency, and circularity.
