This article deals with the the procedural dimensions of valuation processes in light of the ideals of justice in which they are embedded. It discusses the neo-scholastic notion of "communis æstimatio" and analyses its contents in 17th-and 18th-century Italy. Drawing on the study of a series of manuals and appraisal reports drawn up in Milan and other cities and regional states of the peninsula, the article also sheds light on the methods and criteria used to calculate a quantity called «intrinsic value», whose widespread use during the preindustrial times has been well documented, but not yet fully explained.
