101The territorial articulation of administrative organization in Italy has undergone many distinct phases, marked by different developmental directions (construction; order; new imagination; functionalization; adaptation to new social needs and administrative languages). The succession of these phases has also paralleled the development of different conceptions of territorial autonomy and the way legal science should approach it. The current face of autonomy, rather than marking the prevalence of a specific theory, is characterized by the coexistence of all the institutional and interpretative experiences developed thus far. Even for the lawyer who studies these phenomena, this historical result requires the awareness of the need to reaffirm its traditional role of guarantee in a more flexible and dynamic manner.
