This essay is aimed at retracing and honoring the academic and intellectual legacy of Silvana Castignone, a highly influential figure in Italian Philosophy of Law during the second half of the twentieth century. It seeks to illuminate the depth of her thought, the originality of her contributions, and the enduring influence of her work on contemporary debates. The analysis of her work begins with her pivotal role in advancing the study of legal realism – both American and Scandinavian – and proceeds to her engagement with bioethical questions, particularly concerning the rights of animals and the environment, themes that she introduced into Italian legal-philosophical debate during the 1980s. Within this framework, the analysis turns to her reflections on environmental ethics and the ethics of care, aligning her with the central aim of ecofeminism: amplifying women’s voices in defense of the environment.
