276This paper considers the history and etymology of the Italian term "copione" 'prompt-book'. It begins by examining the lexical framework that preceded, accompanied, and followed the establishment of the term, before tracing its development over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. The study then considers two etymological hypotheses for "copione": one deriving it as an augmentative of "copia" 'faithful transcription of a text', and the other as the result of a metonymic shift from "copione" 'one who copies', ultimately opting for the former. The discussion concludes with a comparative overview of the terminology used in English, French, and Spanish to designate the same theatrical object.
