This study critically explores the role, perception and transformations taking place within Italian journalism schools, which are operating in a context characterised by a crisis in cultural professions, the disintermediation of information and the growing importance of digital skills. Through a theoretical analysis and a qualitative investigation conducted via semi-structured interviews and focus group with former students, teachers and coordinators of master’s programmes recognised by the Order of Journalists, three key dimensions were identified: the symbolic and institutional legitimacy of the schools; the cultural and attitudinal profile of the students; and the prospects for reforming the training system. The results highlight tensions between enabling functions and educational value, and between technical knowledge and epistemic responsibility. While schools currently act as normative devices, they often lack social recognition and pedagogical impact. Critical issues related to access, educational inequality, and the fragmented relationship with the journalistic labour market also emerge. The study proposes rethinking the educational model systemically, orienting it towards integrating academic training with editorial practice, promoting social inclusion and developing critical, ethical and transmedia skills. This is based on the view of journalism as a civic practice and a common good.
