This article examines the challenges posed by disinformation and post-truth dynamics in the Italian media system, with a specific empirical focus on traditional journalism. While most existing research on post-truth concentrates on social media, this study offers a complementary perspective by analysing journalists’ views and experiences. Drawing on semi-structured interviews conducted primarily with journalists from diverse media outlets, and secondarily with stakeholders in professional bodies and regulatory institutions, the article explores how media professionals perceive and address disinformation and related issues. It also situates journalists’ practices and opinions within the evolving European regulatory framework on disinformation, investigating how newsrooms, professional bodies, and regulatory authorities interpret and implement EU regulations. The findings reveal substantial differences in how journalists understand and respond to disinformation, with their perceptions and strategies shaped by organisational contexts and normative beliefs. At the same time, the study identifies common challenges shared by journalists across different media outlets, generating new empirical evidence to inform policies aimed at strengthening journalism and its critical role in sustaining democratic societies.
