Index-finger pointing is a milestone in children developing communication, and pointing gestures, like utterances in context, can convey different meanings whose interpretation requires an early form of pragmatic understanding. There is extensive empirical research on infant pointing, but the question about the cognitive underpinnings of early pragmatic understanding is still much debated. This paper provides an overview of the debate by critically examining alternative approaches in developmental and cognitive pragmatics. It also outlines a novel integrative approach that tackles the issue in an empirically informed way.
