295Political choices adopted over the past 50 years have put tremendous stress on cities: gentrification and the privatization of urban spaces have deprived citizens of access to public areas. Climate change has made cities more vulnerable, and the impact of floods and heatwaves has disproportionately affected the most vulnerable groups. We need well-conceived and well-managed public spaces – such as squares, parks, theaters, and libraries – as these are crucial resources that strengthen the much-needed social capital. Libraries, in particular, play a key role in any urban renewal project because they offer noncommercial spaces that are especially important to women, children, migrants, and senior citizens.
