The existence and functioning of the entire cultural sector in Italy are contingent not only on a complex and articulated archipelago of institutions, businesses and professionals, but also on the daily work of volunteers, the majority of whom work without financial compensation. The domain of cultural volunteering is characterised by its elusiveness, which engenders challenges in the provision of statistical representation, resulting in a lack of uniformity and clarity. However, an extensive array of official sources is available for the assessment of its characteristics. This article provides an interpretation of some of the main statistics, produced for various reasons, which can help to reconstruct, directly and indirectly, at least in broad terms, this phenomenon. And starts with a concise over-view of the most recent Eurobarometer survey (2025) on citizens’ attitudes towards culture. The latest ISTAT data on participation (receptive, not active) of people in cultural activities outside the home will be referred to. This will be followed by a review of data on the presence of volunteers in museums, monuments, archaeological sites and libraries in Italy. Finally we present the statistics on non-profit institutions involved in culture and art and conclude with a concise synopsis of the findings from the Fondazione Scuola del Patrimonio (Heritage School Foundation) project, entitled Participation in the Management of Cultural Heritage, published in 2023.
