Using examples from Churchill, Golda Meir and Nixon, Akhtar shows how negation reveals denied psychic truths. Unlike lying, which consciously deceives others, denial deceives oneself. Akhtar then recalls the relationship of denial to repudiation, denial, disavowal, isolation of affection and annulment and that to the function of judgement. Finally, he discusses the clinical implications, emphasising the importance of a prudent analytical approach that respects the patient’s defences rather than forcing their emergence.
