This article examines the link between linguistic negation and the psychic operation of negation described by Freud in "Die Verneinung". Linguistic negation is an expedient that allows the return of the repressed and the corporeal unthought. It combines denial with the ascertainment of absence and allows the subject to express a judgement that he does not, however, take upon himself. Moreover, it highlights the inflection that Freud imposes on the classical notions of judgement of existence and judgement of attribution, and what this means for a theory of how the psyche considers the world.
