I propose to discuss a particular aspect of Jean Hyppolite’s 1954 commentary to Freud’s 1925 article "Die Verneinung". To explain the Freudian text, Hyppolite, a French translator of "The Phenomenology of Spirit", mobilises concepts from Hegel, in particular "Aufhebung" and «negation of negation». The question is to understand what he tries to clarify and above all to show what this interpretation raises as a problem. I have also tried to the way in which some detractors sometimes misrepresent Hyppolite’s proposal, which is more measured and circumspect than one might think.
