From his very first Seminar Lacan refers to Freud’s "Verneinung" and draws indications from it to specify the difference between the «I» that speaks and the subject of the unconscious. But the "Verneinung" also makes it possible to specify the psychic mechanisms Freud identifies, such as repression and denial. Lacan draws from the Freudian text of The Wolf Man a third mechanism at play in psychosis, that of forclusion. Lacan’s elaboration on negation is developed at the level of grammar, language and logic. Through the latter Lacan shows how the logic of the phantom functions in a cure. Detached from the Freudian negation, he then elaborates the pas-tout (not-all), which concerns the jouissance that he calls feminine.
