The list of Roman prescriptions relating to the condemnation of memory is of great interest to those who wish to highlight the Roman forms of remembrance and its persistence: and, by comparison, those of our own culture. Roman memory can be seen to revolve around two main poles: the sculpted or painted image (from that depicted in the form of a statue or relief to the funeral mask) and the name (from that engraved on monuments to the «living» name, pronounced in the laudatio funebris or taken on by members of subsequent generations).
