Bion speaks of negative capability, which depends on the mind’s capacity to endure the unconscious – the terrifying abyss of what is not yet thinkable and awaits a mental capacity able to think it. The inability to tolerate an empty space drives one to rely on memories, theories, and familiar thoughts. If negative capability were absent, the space available for intuition and for a change that fosters mental growth would be stifled. This is what both patient and analyst risk resorting to in order to avoid being drawn into a process of transformation, evolution, and growth that can occur only in emptiness and is open to the unknown.
