559The complex history of the acceptance of negative numbers is explored, highlighting how their introduction encountered cultural, psychological and educational obstacles. From their earliest traces in China and India to their slow establishment in the West, negative numbers have long been considered «absurd» or mere gimmicks. It was only between the 19th and 20th centuries, thanks to a new vision of mathematics as a coherent system of rules, that full theoretical and didactic acceptance of these fundamental concepts was achieved.
