In this paper, Nicola Gardini suggests three moments as parts of an ideal history of the shadow, considering it one of the essential metaphors of literary and philosophical thought: Virgil, Celio Calcagnini, and Baldassar Castiglione. He shows that, emancipated from the censorious Platonic-Christian tradition, the shadow emerges as a positive ethical paradigm in the Renaissance. The paper also constitutes a contemporary advocacy of the shadow, namely the undefined and the still unexplored, arguing against the current tendency in politics and technology to formalize knowledge according to rigid prescriptive frameworks that leave no room for the unexpected and the variety of free imagination.
