Starting from William Kentridge’s "Triumphs and Laments" and Georges Didi-Huberman’s photographic book Scorze about Auschwitz, the article examines artistic approaches grounded in the idea of historical memory as erasure and revelation. Kentridge’s images, emerging from the Tiber ramparts like the birch barks photographed by Didi-Huberman, convey fragments of a collective memory. Victories and defeats intertwine in the tension between denial and recognition of trauma. In today’s era of conflict, these works question the human capacity to keep memory alive.
