614In this paper, Nadia Fusini explores the link between melancholy and negative capability as a poetic response to the paralysis of the dark mood. Through Keats’s "Ode on Melancholy" and her reading of Burton’s "Anatomy of Melancholy", Fusini shows how Keats turns negation into a creative force: the ability to dwell in uncertainty and doubt without succumbing to despair. Negative capability thus becomes a principle of knowledge and «soul-making», where the poet’s vulnerability transforms into the possibility of thought, anticipating psychoanalytic reflections on the negative.
