Music is a fundamental and original element of the psyche, often characterized by its negative and unknowable qualities: among these, the property of being a symbol without symbolic content, which expresses and arouses emotions without content or object, and the fact that it consists not so much in a sequence of sounds, but in the intervals that separate them. Silence is both the essence of music and its negation. Music is a language of the negative. Examples are given of how music can represent the process of negation in various ways, allowing unwanted or latent movements of the psychic life to be preserved.
