639The author takes his cue from Melville’s "Bartleby the scrivener" to discuss what he calls a «paradoxical negation». Bartleby’s response to the lawyer’s invitations introduces with the verb «to prefer» a desire that fails to disappear with negation. In an imaginary dialogue with other authors, including Deleuze, Russo and Agamben, the paradoxical negation is declined in the terms of a question that patients similar to Bartleby pose to the analyst: they would prefer not to do the analysis but remain, displaying traits that suggest «dépense» (Bataille), and a drives disengagement that recalls the «primal erogenous masochism».
