What are the reasons behind the almost total absence of female figures in twentieth-century Italian culture? Beyond the more obvious socio-anthropological considerations, as part of a research study on the dynamics of the erasure of significant female figures in artistic production in Italy in the first half of the last century, this article examines six female artists forgotten for reasons related to their relationship with the male world, which did not protect them but erased them: Edina Altara, Tullia Socin, Ida Donati, Mimi Quilici, Nori de Nobili, and Juana Romani.
