This article reviews the book "States of Denial" by Stanley Cohen. It highlights three levels of analysis which, starting from a description of historical manifestations of violence caused by communities, identify a point of observation on the universal phenomenon of social disavowal as a mechanism, distinct from the notion of denial, in which the perception of pain and violence is denied through the instruments adopted by governments, ethnic groups, religious groups, politicians and ideologies. The sociological analysis is intertwined here with the psychoanalytic reflection. Collective disavowal, in this interpretative perspective, becomes pervasive.
