370The paper uses Nietzsche’s treatment of the orgiastic in "The Birth of Tragedy" as a proposed foundation for an environmentalism suitable for wrestling with the implications of the Anthropocene. The paper works toward this conclusion through an examination of Nietzsche’s analysis of the human condition, primarily in terms of how human beings qualify as anomalies, creatures that are both natural and unnatural. The human being is demonstrated to be distinct from other animals and as such, it cannot be made compatible with nature. In this way, the paper stresses that the orgiastic gives us the means to experience nature without having to forfeit our status as «unnatural». The paper roots this conclusion in a discussion of Nietzsche’s commentary on tragic art and his critique of opera, concluding with an overview of how the Nietzschean model of the orgiastic opens up possibilities for a new and productive encounter with the natural world.
